Day 13: Pulled A Muscle!

Today I did 40 minutes of Turbo Jam Cardio Party and I think during the workout I got a little too into it and pulled a lower back muscle. Eek! Nonetheless, like every workout I complete, I felt accomplished. I had only planned to do 20 minutes since I felt really tired from the past weekend, but I pushed it and did the 40. Yay! :)

I was reading my RSS feeds via Google Reader and I again got inspired. A 22 year old, Eric at 230 lbs, 5′10” decided to change his life by eating healthy and exercising after the loss of a grandparent. He marked a date, subscribed to Men’s Fitness, started exercising and played a lot of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). A year later he’s at 185 lbs and keeping the weight off. He plans to travel Europe and run the Chicago Marathon in 2008.

It really inspired me to really be even more serious. Before I read this I was contemplating running a 5K (there’s one in the area in September). I realized that I need a goal to work towards. I can currently run 1 mile in less than 15 minutes, so I guess that’s a start. I better start following this, huh?

Setting a goal 5k, and actually registering for it as soon as you can, is a great way to motivate yourself. You will not want to waste your registration fee, you will help the race organizers plan their event because they’ll know you will be there (as a race director myself, it makes a huge difference when people preregister), and you will have a definite date of when you will be racing for the first time.

I hope that you get hooked on racing; it is one of my favorite activities. A few years ago, a friend of my brother’s visited Maine the weekend of the Beach to Beacon (a very popular 10k that requires preregistration 4 or 5 months in advance) so I brought him to the starting line and convinced one of the ladies on a baggage bus to drive him to the finish.

I believe his exact words to me after I finished were, “I’ve never seen so many happy people in one place!” Even people that were hurting after a particular bad (or good) race were in a good mood and enjoying the post-race festivities.

You’re absolutely right. Registering for it as soon as I can is a great way for me to motivate myself. I’m actually going to start the Couch to 5k plan this week. There are always 5k’s going on around here so even if I don’t make the one I plan to, there’s always another one I could do. I’ve always wanted to do a race but I guess I’ve just always been too intimidated. Now I want to do it because it’s just something more I can do to be in shape and prove myself that I can accomplish a race. We’ll definitely see!

This is exactly what I did. I knew I had to put some money down for an organized event to get myself running again. It’s definitely worked. I’m running a 5K at the end of August. I also pulled a muscle in my hip a few weeks ago because I over did it in an class. It feels good to know there’s a definitive goal in the near future to accomplish! The American Running Association also has a great walk-to-run 12 week program to ease you into running.
