Today was a less intense day for exercising. I decided to take a rest from running and do some arm and ab exercise. I definitely need to get the courage to do these exercises at the gym because when I was working out my Pitbull pup Logan was licking my face as I was doing sit ups on the floor. Cute, but difficult to concentrate.
Lately I’ve been in a rut when it comes to eating healthy. Healthy good food is kind of hard to come by especially when you live at home with your parents still. Money wise it’s a bargain. I barely have to buy groceries. My mom is an excellent cook and it’s pretty hard to pass up her Filipino dishes, which usually goes with rice. It’s like, if you don’t eat the dish with rice it’s like you’re not getting the full flavor of it. Eating so much rice majority of the week I’ve noticed is taking a toll on me and my weight loss efforts. So lately I’ve been avoiding the white rice and will pretty much not eat white rice with my dishes and we’ll see what happens. Brown rice isn’t too bad and is fibrous so that may be my alternative.
In fact, there is actually a difference between brown rice and white rice. Brown rice is a grain that has had only the inedible outer hull removed, and has not been polished. White rice is the same grain, but from which the bran and germ have been removed by polishing. White rice is the starchy part of the grain, while brown rice has the fiber (cleans the intestines) and germ which is good for nourishment. Brown rice also slows down the absorption of carbohydrates, which white rice doesn’t do. Although Filipino dishes are usually eaten with white rice, I think it will be more to my benefit to eat brown rice. I’ve tasted it before and it really isn’t too bad, the only thing is that its kind of a nuttier texture than white rice, but I could get used to it.

Amen. Seriously, living at home is rice death. You cannot escape till you move out. I myself have avoided it like a plague. Breakfast = Cereal, Lunch/Dinner = Salad and some meat. Carbs, taken in, but HEAVILY monitored.
Good luck with avoiding the rice.
Brown rice is excellent for you!!!!
You can make a ton of it and then use it for several meals.
All complex carbs are good because they are absorbed slowly and keep you feeling full. They also provide great nutrition. I like brown rice, whole grain bread, steel cut oats (very versatile, cheap at Whole Foods), and yams.
After workouts you can do simple carbs to refuel and replace your glycogen stores.
I am right there with you when it comes to rice! When my mom cooks it is hard to resist. Brown rice is a good alternative though and I don’t mind the taste.
I always try to eat brown rice instead of white. The problem is that:
a. White rice tastes so much better!!
b. My kids won’t touch brown rice, so I have to cook both types. What a pain!
Here’s to healthy eating even when it’s a challenge.
