My Constant Battle With Mosquito Bites

by Sue on August 28, 2007

Mosquito AttackingFor a few years now, whenever I got a mosquito bite, it got really swollen. The one worst place that I’d get bit is on my ankles and feet. One single bite from a mosquito there and I could barely walk, let alone exercise. Yesterday at work I went to the bathroom and when I came out with 4 welts on my lower back. I got back at the mosquito by killing it and flushing it down the toilet. I was planning to run yesterday but the welts needed to be treated and I ended up not doing much yesterday. A while back I went to the doctor and wanted to see why whenever I got bit by a mosquito it would swell up so much. I found out I was allergic to them.

There really isn’t anything I could do once I got bit, except put antihistamine cream on the bite and take claritin or benadryl. It definitely works for me. But time is really the only thing for them to disappear, or at least not be bothersome. There are so many remedies I’ve found on the internet such as:

  • Putting the bite over hot water – relieves itching but the swelling is still there
  • Vicks Vaporub – never tried it but it apparently works for some people
  • Rub a banana peel – sounds weird and messy so I’ll pass
  • Rubbing alcohol – tried this and it relieves the itch for a short while
  • Scotch tape over the bite – tried this today and it actually made the swelling on my arm go down
  • Ice pack – relieves the itch, but the swelling doesn’t seem to go down
  • Toothpaste – never tried this but apparently works for some people, too messy for me

Mosquitoes like movement, heat and carbon dioxide according to this article, which in my opinion is totally unavoidable. Mosquitoes are everywhere, especially where I live, so whenever I go out biking or fishing in the boat I have to spray Off all over myself, wear long pants and sneakers. There’s really no way out of not getting bit. Careful planning is definitely worth not getting bit.

A local farmer here in Maine makes an oil that he calls “Skeeter Skedaddler” and it works extremely well. It scares off not only the mosquitos, but the black flies and deer flies as well. I also have to own up to the fact that I’m the person that smells good while out on a run, although a few of my friends have started using the stuff as well now that they’ve seen how effective that it is.

I normally don’t have serious problems with mosquito bites but the itch is irritating.
I also think rubbing a banana peel is a bit messy.

Interesting ideas. I’ve tried using vicks vaporub and toothpaste and they work well for me. However, they’re too messy to deal with, especially if you’re not at home.

I heard taking Vitamin B1 helps to keep them away. As I currently have 5 welts on my neck and others on my arms and hands, I am ready to try it–sleeping soaked in Skintastic didn’t work at all!
