The Running Outdoors Experience

by Sue on September 9, 2007

So yesterday I finished week 5 of the Couch to 5k training program by running outside. Day 3 consisted of a 5 minute walk then a 20 minute run followed by a 5 minute cool down walk. I went to the park and ran on the sidewalk and boy, was it a tough workout! Running outdoors is definitely different than running on a treadmill. On a treadmill you’re on one elevation with a padded floor, while outside you face different elevations as well as the concrete floor. I had to walk for a few seconds more than once to catch my breath and to ease the burning of my legs. I also came to realize that the actual 5k will bare these conditions so I have decided to train outdoors this week before the race so I can get used to it. I’m glad that I realized this sooner than running the 5k not knowing how different conditions are.

I registered for the 5k at the local running store and I got a number and a t-shirt. At the running store I also bought one of those waist packs with a water bottle and zippered pouch for my phone. It will come in handy when I run the 5k and I already tried it when I ran outside yesterday. It’s definitely getting used to and adds more weight, but having water handy is definitely necessary when you’re running in 80 degree weather!

My eating habits are getting better as I have totally avoided anything fast food and anything oily. I went to Whole Foods and had a chicken teriyaki bowl with brown rice and veggies for lunch and bought some more bumble bars. The teriyaki bowl was really good and went with the brown rice pretty well. I also had sushi for dinner, which I regretted since it didn’t taste good, and we only went because of meeting up with some friends, so at least there were some good laughs. I guess I can count that meal as my ‘indulge’ meal, although it wasn’t worth the indulgement.
