I heard about this fruit from John’s blog and thought the fact that it was a hybrid fruit was really interesting. A pluot is a hybrid of a plum and apricot, but for the most part it is more plum than apricot. The taste is really sweet which definitely satisfies a sweet tooth. I’m constantly looking for new things to snack on, especially fruit and anything made from natural ingredients. I guess in a way I’m leaning towards more organic foods, but they don’t come cheap! I started to wonder what the difference was between organic and non organic foods…
I’ve learned that anything organically grown is grown using natural fertilizers such as manure in their crops. To prevent insect and bird disruption, they use traps to shoo away rather than pesticides. Basically organically grown foods, notably fruits and vegetables are chemical free at all costs.
When you see a label on food that says USDA Organic, it means it was produced and processed by USDA standards as organic and is 95% or more certified.
As for nutritional value, organic foods are really no different from non organic, other than the fact organic foods may spoil faster because they aren’t treated with waxes or preservatives. Taste of organic foods usually differ from each person.
After reading this article, gave me a better insight about organic food, and when I’m picking fruits, I’ll most likely get the freshest fruits organic or not. As for the pluots, they only had organic, and not knowing what to expect, it wasn’t really a factor in me getting them. I’d definitely get pluots again though either way because they were really yummy!

Glad you liked them! My experiment with the Asian Pears was not so good but the kids and I really like Blackberries now, something I’ve certainly had before but never bought while shopping. Glad I tried them because its been a great healthy snack for my kids and gettin them to eat fruit is always a challenge.
Pluots…interesting to say the least. If your tastebuds are feeling like some fruit Philadelphia cream cheese comes in flavors like pineapple and strawberry!
Very interesting post. I had no ideas that fruits could be hybrids. Are there any other interesting or tasty hybrid fruits out there?
