My First 5K Experience

by Sue on September 16, 2007

So I did it! I ran my first 5K race! I can’t believe that I finished under the time I wanted to, which was 40 minutes. :) I woke up at 5am and got ready and left the house by 6am. There were 2 groups – the Over The Hill (racers over 40 years old) race, which started at 7:00am and then the Young and the Restless (racers under 40 years old) race which started at 7:05am. There were a lot of people of all ages and fitness levels which made me feel better since I really didn’t know what to expect.

As soon as 7:05am hit I started running at a good pace for about 15 minutes without stopping. I got some water at the one water station and kept going. From there, it got kind of difficult and I did end up walking, but I knew that I had to continue running. The course conditions was mostly flat and it was definitely getting more humid as the sun was rising up. I remember how the park was like when I went there on Friday so I knew I had a lot more to go at a certain point. But I was wrong because the corner I thought there was a lot more to go I saw the finish line and I saw all those people waiting! As soon as the finish line was in sight, I started really running, almost sprinting until I hit the finish line! It was definitely a rush and I enjoyed the experience.

I finished the race in 36:22 and placed 6th in my age group. My initial goal was to run the 5k in under 40 minutes and I did it! To be honest, as I was running the race I felt like I wasn’t going to finish in the goal I made, and I just wanted to finish. I was still surprised to hear I finished the race in under 40 minutes I had to keep asking my boyfriend if he was sure I ran it in 36:22. LOL.

Congratulations on the 5K! I recognize the Fort Lauderdale Road Runners sign! I’m living in Mississippi for now, but I grew up in South Florida and occasionally run a 5K when I’m home. Keep up the good work ;)

    Great job!

See, I told you that you’d enjoy it! Racing is just a lot of fun, and the people that race are good people which just makes it that much more fun.

Congratulations on smashing your goal! So how long until 5k #2, and are you going to aim for sub-35:00 or sub-30:00?
