Work Up A Sweat With Cardio Interval Training

by Sue on September 26, 2007

High Intensity Interval TrainingToday I went to the gym and tried something new on the treadmill. I did run, but I did something what is referred to as interval training. Interval training is basically doing intervals of a certain workout, in my case, running in bursts of high and low intensity. By running interval training style you’re burning fat efficiently while improving your cardiovascular capabilities.

Here is the exact workout I did today:
5 min warm up walk at 3.5 mph
1 1/2 min high intensity run at 5.5mph
1 min low intensity walk at 3.9 mph
(Repeated 8 times)
5 min cool down walk at 3.5 mph

After I finished the workout I felt great! It was definitely a challenge to run at a faster speed, but I was able to complete the workout and that’s all that mattered. I’m definitely going to do this workout again.

I am a big fan of interval runs too. I do them especially when I’m not really feeling motivated to do a long run session.

What a great workout! I love intervals too because they seem like a game to me and really break up the monotony of treadmill walking/running.
