Making Good Fast Food Choices

by Sue on October 9, 2007

Fast food is around mostly for convenience, and although I try to avoid it at all costs, sometimes I can’t, especially if I’m on the go and don’t have time to make my lunch. I know, it sounds bad, but when you really don’t have the time to prepare a meal, it’s better to eat something than skip it entirely, right? Getting fast food can be unavoidable especially when there is nothing else around when you’re on a road trip. You can still eat healthy, you just need to make good fast food choices.

Healthier fast food choices include the following:

  • Don’t order the value sized meal.
  • Get something from their value menu (not to be confused with value sized meal – these are the items on the 99 cent or $1 menu) or even a kids meal since the portions are smaller.
  • Skip the soda, try to get a bottle of water or even iced tea.
  • Get grilled instead of the breaded fried sandwiches and lay off the mayo.
  • Get a salad with fat free dressing – and avoid the fried croûtons as well.
  • Made to order places such as a deli or Subway usually are better since you control what you put on the sandwich or wrap (even better).

Getting fast food doesn’t always have to be bad – you just need to be smart (and think healthy!) about what you order.

Or, rather than going to a “fast food” place, go to your local deli and get a fresh sandwich. It will taste better and be healthier. Often times, it will be cheaper, too.

Skipping the soda is what I have been doing for the past year and I have lost 20 pounds from exercising and eliminating soda in my life. Dieting is not that hard when little changes take place.
