Good Posture Equals Healthy Back

Sitting At A DeskToday at work a masseuse came in for back massages for all the employees. Talk about a great perk!  I realized as I was getting a massage that the reason for all the tension in my upper part of my back is because of my posture. I sit in front of a computer all day and sometimes when I’m really into my work I tend to lean towards the computer screen and I don’t even realize this sometimes.

After some research I found out that good posture equals a healthy back. Why? If you’re supporting your back the right way, your prevent muscle pain in your back as well as preventing fatigue. You don’t stress your muscles in this area as much if you sit up straight. I think many of us have this problem because we just don’t realize that we don’t sit up properly.

Some tips to achieving good posture when you sit at a desk:

  • Keep your feet flat on the floor
  • Avoid sitting in the same position for more than 30 minutes
  • Sit up with your back to the chair, with your buttocks at the very end of the chair.
  • Purchase a back support for your chair.  (I need to get one for my chair at work and at home! Any suggestions?)
  • Adjust your chair length and desk if possible. The best arrangement when sitting at a computer is the screen being closer so you don’t slouch forward trying to look at the screen. (I’m trying to improve this one myself!)
