The Start of Healthy Eating

by Sue on February 19, 2008

This week, I’ve decided to ease into eating healthier and planning out my meals. I achieve three things by doing this: I save money by not buying my lunch, I can portion out my meals, and it’s a lot easier to log my food intake.

Another thing I started doing is logging my food intake on my iPhone, which is easy for me since I always have it with me. I also stumbled upon this website called The Daily Plate. I just signed up, and from a quick glance I notice that you can log your food intake and see how many calories you consume each day. It’s pretty interesting to get a rough estimate on how many calories you consume.

The only thing negative thing I can say about this site is that it is somewhat slow. I also like how the site gives you alternatives to help you consume less calories. Calories aren’t everything, but it’s good to know other things, like carbs, sodium and other nutrition information.

After a logging your food intake for a week, or even a month, take a look back and see how you’ve been eating.

Want to see what I ate today and how many calories (roughly, of course) I consumed?

The last thing on that list, Pancit, is a Filipino dish which is noodles with vegetables, and some kind of protein (it varies). In this dish that I ate, there was shrimp. I was actually surprised it was in the database!

You can check out my profile and add me if you’ve already signed up. :)

What’s scary is that that is less than half of what I eat throughout the course of a day…

No way, they had pancit on there! I use the Daily Plate all the time, but did not realize they had filipino food on it. Gotta see if they have adobo, lumpia, and longanisa.

Oo, could you take a pic or do a quick video of how you input your food intake on your iPhone. Sounds fascinating. I’m thinking of getting an iPhone.

That sounds like a great site that you found – calorie intake is so important. Most people who try to lose weight consume way to few calories. With the information that you now have you know exactly how you are doing. If you are interested in some really useful dieting tips I just published a post at http://health-vitamin.info Good Luck!

The Daily Plate sounds a lot like my SparkPeople.com. :)

Great to hear about your healthy eating and meal planning – it definitely gets easier over time. (It helps to find a few tasty and quick recipes you enjoy.)

Thanks for the great review, Sue!

Logging what you eat is a great idea! I think that if you know what you are taking in and can look back on it then you can better figure out where to cut what to realize any gains you might be seeking. I have some good articles on leaning and healthy dieting at http://aitank.com

Just wanted to say “hi” and congrats on deciding to try and eat healthier. I also jumped on that band wagon a little while back. One helpful trick that me and my roommate made up (possibly?) is not to buy boxed items (e.g. crackers, chips, cookies…) We try and only buy fruits, veggies, meats (all fresh to! bonus!) … Kinda stinks come snack time but over all its made such a difference for us.

G’luck and stick to it!

I have found recording what I eat is the ONLY way I have managed to keep on my diet as it shows how much you have consumed as you go along and then I don’t get tempted to eat more! I will be checking the dailyplate website as I am currently using a spreadsheet.
