Organic Lollipops – My Choice of Sweets

by Sue on March 17, 2008

Yummy Earth Organic LollipopsI never thought there was such a thing of organic candy, let alone lollipops, until I saw an episode of TLC’s Jon and Kate Plus Eight. The family eats a lot of organic food, and I noticed that Kate was giving her kids these organic lollipops and I knew that I had to give that a try. The ones that I found at Whole Foods were by Yummy Earth, and they’re actually really good!

These lollipops are gluten free, wheat free, egg free, dairy free, 100% natural colors and flavors and no artificial flavors. Yummy Earth also makes other candies such as candy drops in many different flavors. These lollipops are definitely free of feeling guilty about eating candy, so this is definitely a choice for me when I’m feeling like eating something sweet.

I cringe when I hear about organic candy companies that use Tapioca as a base for their products. The U.S. Department of Health Agency for Toxic Substances Substances. (ATSDR) http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts8.html names Cassava as the primary source ingredient for manufacturing of Tapioca. It is a plant that contains high levels of cyanide. The FDA provides for a maximum tolerance allowed in food but do they take into consideration whether it’s a 300 pound male or 30 pound child that will be consuming it, nor do they consider the accumulated amounts that may be consumed.
I don’t know how many tapioca candies it would take to cause adverse effects.. for my kids… none is too many.

Does anyone have a recipe to make organic lollipops?
