An Alternative Way of Doing Cardio: Rollerblading!

by Sue on April 14, 2008

A new week means a fresh start in eating right and exercising for me. I had planned to go running but instead I decided to go rollerblading. The last time I went rollerblading was probably in the summer for only a few minutes. So today Glen and I went rollerblading around the park. We rollerbladed around the park for about half an hour, and I definitely could feel the burn in my legs. I was curious and I looked up online to see how many calories you could burn rollerblading and it’s between 600-800 an hour, but since we only went for half an hour, we probably burned 300-400 calories.

I really like working out outdoors rather than the gym, so I’m considering getting rid of the membership and just work out in the neighborhood gym, as well as outside and home. It’s one expense that I don’t have to worry about. You can still be fit without the gym, so I’m definitely going to find different ways to exercise. :)

rollerblading rocks! it’s much easier than skateboarding which i was into last year.

also, i didn’t know you could burn that much! neat. biking is fun too. i have a small folding buck from Dahon. it’s not the fastest bike, but nice to cruise and since it folds it allows for nice storage.

I wish the weather was good enough over here in the UK to enjoy exercising outdoors. I also wish I was good enough at rollerblading to take it outdoors when the weather does brighten up lol.

On a serious note, I do agree with the theme of your post. Gyms can get boring for some people. I won’t be giving up my membership but I will definitely be trying to do some more jogging and cycling when the good weather comes.

I used to love roller blading! I haven’t done it in so long though, hopefully I remember how?

I say freeze the membership and enjoy the outdoors!

I used to roller blade also, but now Im afraid I might break a leg! But I am so getting excited for warm weather so I can get out and do more stuff–biking, hiking, walking! Love the outdoors!

Great post.I feel that sometimes the best exercise is the kind done outside. Also some of the best exercise that works different muscles and burns tons of calories is not considered “exercise”. So I say get outside. Rollerblade, bike, dig a ditch, climb a mountain and stay in shape the fun way not just on a treadmill right!

Was rollin’ around on my blades just yesterday. My fav cardio option, for sure.

I even find the yearly maintenance on them actually meditative! Which reminds me, if I want to go like stink, I’d better get my new brake and bearings cleaner.

Thanks for the post… and reminder!

Definitely one of my favorite methods of working out. So fun, a great group workout and a great way to get familiar with your area!
