Finding Ways To Work Out Without A Gym

by Sue on June 3, 2008

Yesterday I had to cancel my gym membership with the gym I was part of for about 2 years. There were a couple reasons why I canceled, and for a while actually, I’ve been meaning to cancel. The first reason was to cut my personal expenses. The second reason was that I wasn’t utilizing the gym enough to make it worth it. Trust me, I felt pretty bad canceling, but at the same time, it’s for the best.

That doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop exercising though. I still can use the small gym in my community and I have the essentials for working out at home.

Here is a list of the equipment I own and from there, I can figure out different types of exercises I can do with them:

Pair of 5lbs Free Weight dumbbells, which gives endless types of workouts to tone your body – available from Amazon.

Stability Ball & Resistance Cords– I have the Oxygen Fit Body Ball and Slastix Toners I was given by them. (check them out!)

I also have some workout videos and Wii Fit, so there’s plenty of things to do, and its so much fun that you don’t even realize that you’re working out!

As for cardio, if you don’t have a treadmill or one that’s accessible, there’s always running outside. There’s also bicycle riding and rollerblading too, even if its for 15-20 minutes. For an indoor workout, there’s also always my 20 min cardio Turbo Jam DVD! Netflix is also a great way to try out different workout videos without actually purchasing them.

So with these ideas in mind, I guess there really isn’t any excuse for me not to work out (and you too)! :)

    Hello,
don`t worry about your membership!I have been working out at home for more than a year now, and pretty much for the same reason – but I also found going to the gym very time consuming: it takes almost 3 hours at the gym (including a trip there and back), and I can have the same thing at home only spending an hour and a half.
    Good luck for you!

I quit the gym a few years back, too. You are right – there are so many activities you can do to stay fit without the gym. You can bike, hike, jog (as you already said), dance. There are so many options and for me not going to the gym means I’m switching things up and not getting bored while saving time and money! It’s easier to stay motivated. Enjoy and good luck!

    Hey Sue,

Good luck with working out from home. I’m sure you will be fine. I personally prefer working out at the gym. When I don’t go and make plans to work out at home I always find there are too many distractions.

I’ve heard good things about Wii Fit, and I’m really interested! Let us know how it goes…especially the yoga “game!”
I’ve never had a gym membership, and I work out every day and am just as fit as my friends who go to the gym…don’t worry you’ll be fine!

    Hi Sue!

If you need a solution for the commute/gym membership/sweaty gross guys undressing you in the mirror problem, I have a possible solution for you I use with my own personal training clients.

The joy of Webcam. If you or any of your members have webcams I would encourage them to ask their trainer/get online and go through a workout together! That way you can virtually encourage each other without having to brave the highway – your workout just became both time and environmentally friendly!

It would be my pleasure to train someone as motivated as yourself :) I would be glad to personally take you through a couple of sessions so you can see what it is all about.

Good luck with your fitness! Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
