I was talking to a friend about the fact that when fighting a cold you’re better off just resting it out and drinking a lot of fluids, instead of taking a bunch of antibiotics and other medicine. I don’t know about you, but whenever I get a cold I always feel even worse after taking medicine. When I don’t take medicine, I usually get over a cold in 3-4 days. I know some people who have been fighting a cold for more than 7 days and they usually have taken some sort of antibiotics.
I guess it really is a preference, but as much as possible, I really try to avoid taking any type of medicine, unless I am really suffering, otherwise I just let it make it’s way out of my system. A common example would be the typical headache. Usually, when you have a headache, it’s best to drink a lot of water, instead of popping an aspirin. If you’re absolutely in pain and agony, then make that aspirin your last resort.
I really wonder what others think about this subject, so feel free to voice your opinion in the comments.

Also, keep in mind that most colds are caused by viruses and not bacteria so antibiotics do nothing to actually help the cold. According to a biology teacher of mine from highschool, many doctors will still prescribe antibiotics when they are requested by the patient just to make the patient happy/get them out of the office.
Totally agree with you Sue. I only go for meds when I am in absolute agony. I can get through the majority of colds with a regular supply of hot drinks
Good article - this is a point many health professionals are trying to get across these days. I think it’s an older generation mindset that if you have a cold you must get antibiotics. When in reality medication will do nothing for the common cold - you need rest and fluids!
Another great post!..really enjoyed reading your blog..looking to read more from you..thanks for the helpful infos about health!
thats right. You better take a rest than taking antibiotics and some medicines. It will make your body immune to it.
Hey, Sue!
I love the blog. You are right about not resorting to pills for a quick fix.But for me it depends. If I have a cold and don’t take Nighquill, I get really sick and miserable! But when it comes minor issues then you can’t pay me enough to take a pill. And it’s a very good advice to drink more water when you have a headache, because dehydration can lead to a lot of health problems, you might not even realize, like joint pain, fatigue, muscle stiffness, high blood pressure and so on. And if yo have headache you can also do some yoga breathing exercises. You can find a bunch of them online. They allow for more oxygen into your blood and brain and help with headache and tiredness.
