Exercising Everyday… Really Necessary?

by Sue on April 6, 2009

I was thinking about this today and with a busy work day behind me, I just feel like wanting to eat dinner and relax.  I know that there are people out there who really exercise everyday, but if you eat right and all, is it really necessary?  Now that I will be taking dance classes 2 times a week, it just makes me think if that is enough for the week.  I don’t know.  I guess if you’re trying to lose a lot of weight, it will benefit you to exercise everyday, but if you just want to keep at your current weight, is 2 days of exercise, whatever it may be, it’s enough.  Call me out if I’m wrong, but I’m wondering what you guys think.

I decided to not look at eating healthy as dieting, but more as a change in eating habits… I think everyone should think that way!

As a competitive athlete, I can’t imagine not exercising almost every day. I take the odd day off here and there, but I also workout 2 or even 3 times per day fairly regularly. It’s just a part of my lifestyle.

If you have a relatively active lifestyle, then devoting a block of time to exercise every day may not be that important. If you are relatively sedentary during the normal course of your day, though, then that’s just all the more reason to get out and do something.

For myself, I usually sit in front of a computer for most of the day, so getting outside for a run is necessary for me to maintain my sanity. I can’t imagine going without.

I’m no hardcore athlete, so my opinion is only based on my own experience. I wouldn’t say that working out every day is necessary, but I’d work out at least 3, preferably 4 days a week. While dance is a huge workout, I don’t know that just two times a week would be enough. Again, this isn’t based on any scientific evidence, so you can choose to ignore me. hehe.

To maintain your weight and health, you should exercise 3-4 times a week an hour or so each time. Or each day for 1/2 hour or so.

So I wouldn’t say that 2 nights of a dance class is enough. Close, but not quite enough. Now add 2 days of weight training and you’ve got it good.

If you want to see results from exercise, whether that’s weight loss or just getting in better shape, I’ve found from personal experience that I need to exercise at least 5-6 days a week for at least 35 minutes a day of intense work. Everyone’s a little different, but the more the better. But I totally understand wanting to relax, too ;-)

Whether if you are just starting out or you are an experienced exerciser, following a training program to guide your workouts is the secret to any successful routine. Without it, your program can get stale, boring and you can easily lose motivation quickly.

Here’s a thought. Many times I hear people say that they need to workout for at least 30-60 minutes each day. Life happens and there may be days when you just don’t have the time or energy to do a regular workout. Here’s an idea. Spend 3-5 minutes each morning sitting on the edge of your bed breathing deeply. Before the breathing get your mind right by thinking of something that brings back successful experiences in your past. Reconnect to the feeling of success. Spend some time breathing each morning and you will find that you’ll get your day off on the right foot. Deep breathing is great exercise. Breathe life into your day.

Hi, 1st you got a really nice blog going. I got some nice info from your links collection, thanks for that.
I started now 3 times to get myself from the couch … I failed 2 times 2007 and 2008. Regarding your question :
I do daily HIIT and 3 times per week weights, BUT nutrition is the key and your mindset. So far I’m happy with my goals and how my body transforms. Best of Luck

I tried to hit the gym 6 days a week but I got really exhausted and it got very boring (lol). So I joined a semi private personal training the group called The Difference. I train 3 days for 90 min a week in a group of 4, with master trainer Roland Semprie, and with this intense high energy workout, there is no need to hit the gym 6 days a week.
