My Thoughts on Zumba!

by Sue on June 21, 2010

So I just got back from my first ever Zumba class and boy, was it a workout!  I’m pretty open to trying out new fitness classes, so I was looking forward to it.  I went to a small dance studio nearby that offers the class and was able to try it out.  The class was fairly small, about 7 people or so.  The workout went right in and it was definitely a challenge keeping up!  If you don’t know what Zumba is, it’s basically a dance workout inspired by Latin dance.  It’s pretty popular and I’ve heard about it for a while but never knew where to go nearby.   I really like dance, but I realize that I’m not too great at it!  I guess it’s natural to feel a bit discouraged when you feel like you can’t keep up.  I’m not sure if I will go back again yet, but I definitely got a good workout!

Anyway, the whole group classes thing made me realize how shy I am.  It’s really difficult for me to just talk to someone, and after the class I noticed that I was just standing around, talking to no one.  I always find myself like this.  I’ve thought about being more social but it kind of terrifies me.  Anyone have any advice??

Do as they did in Youth in Revolt. Create a new persona for yourself and be that person!

    Or… be yourself.

I haven't seen Youth in Revolt yet, but I will stick to being myself!

Aww, you should go back! When I first started I kind of just flailed about, but after going a few times I picked up the moves.

I'm actually not very social at the gym, but a lot of it is because I'm kind of focused on my workout and want to get everything done so I can get home to relax. You got me thinking, “maybe, I should say hello to someone…” :)

I use to be like that and still struggle with shyness. I learned to just take a big breath and do what terrified me. I am an instructor and know that if you go and talk to the instructor after class and strike up a friendship with the instructor it's a good start. I always love a student who respectfully asks questions or thanks me for my class.

As far as being a mess LOL while taking a new class. You should see me! I've been teaching for more years than I want to say and am a 3 degree black belt and was a pro dancer and I still struggling in some of the classes. In dance we take each section and learn it. I aerobics it all gets thrown at you FAST. I am not a fast learner! Don't let that stop you. Ask the teacher for help after class or before class. A good instructor will be glad to help you.

Oh don’t feel bad. My first class I didn’t have a clue what I was doing I kept looking at my friend saying “what was that move?” “what do they want me to do” Fast forward to now, I teach Zumba! I was hooked after that first class mostly because weight lifting classes scare me and step classes are not for me and event though I love cycle, I loved Zumba more. I still trip myself up a bit but I noticed that no one really cares so long as it’s the right class. I teach a very “dance party” like class. Lights off with disco lights going.
I hope you try again. I was a stay at home mom not really doing very much for myself until I found Zumba.
Keep your head up. You don’t need to be someone else there’s people out there for everyone. And enough classes that you can try until you find one that works best for you.
Hope my story has made you feel better about Zumba :)
