The Importance of Setting Goals

by Sue on August 1, 2010

It’s a new month, so happy August 1st!  I haven’t posted in a few days, and honestly, it’s because of all the things going on in my life lately.  I’ve realized that organization is important!  Being that it’s a new month, I’ve decided that I would set some goals for this month, because setting goals is really important.  Many of us have busy lives, and we tend to put things off because of our busy lives.  I’m definitely guilty of this, and I want to make a change!

I’ve set goals before, only to not attain them because I don’t write them down, or put them right in front of my face.  August is going to be a month of a lot of changes for me, and if I’m going to see any kind of success, I need to start now!  I’ll share some these changes later, but I figure that I should put my August goals out there so I can share my progress with all of you, and maybe inspire you to make some personal goals for this month.

August Goals

  • Work out 3 times a week – combination of Couch to 5K and strength workouts
  • Finish up the online course and write a post about my experiences with it
  • Learn a new healthy recipe every week
  • Finalize “plans” (will share later)

They may not seem like much, but the last goal requires a LOT of work.  And so does learning a new recipe.  I may be over my head on that one, but I’m definitely going to try!!

Do you set goals every month, or do you do something different to achieve goals?  Do share!

Thank you for reminding me to write my fitness goals. I have only one simple goal which is to lose 25 lbs but it's not really defined. I'll have to work on that today. Good luck on your goals!

No problem! I'm sure it will help to define that goal so you're more likely
to stick to getting it done! Good luck to you as well. :)

I'm doing the Couch to 5K too with my family. We're having fun, we're only in week 2 but it's great to get out there. Good luck with your goals :-)

Often when I ask people what they're goals are I usually get the following response: “I don't have any goals, I don't know what I want to do.” My answer is really simple: “You do know what you want to do – you just haven't thought about it yet.” Think about it. How often do you really think about what you want to do or what you want to do next?well I am so glad you have goals and continue it. . love it

Setting goals is an important part of any aspect of your life – but especially in diet and fitness because the results can be measurable. Thanks for the post, and good luck achieving everything you've set out to do.

Goals can also leave us feeling guilty and not good enough. When my clients set goals, I will ask them to put in writing a minimum they KNOW they can accomplish. For example if your goal is to work out 3 x weekly for an hour, I ask them to break it down to totally doable such as: 2x weekly for a half an hour. This way they still feel good about themselves if they don't measure up to their maximum goal requirement! Good luck!

Hi Susan, I just discovered your blog. You are so right about the importance of setting goals and not just about fitness. I find that fitness like everthing else is something that I have to work at. I really believe in looking around me for inspiration to keep me motivated. Reading books, news items, being thankful for what I have etc. The monsoon floods in Pakistan have really made me realise how fortunate most of us are. Thanks

I set goals every six months and make it a point to pull out the paper I wrote them on and look at them regularly. Good luck!
