Have You Been Workin On Your Fitness?

by Sue on August 27, 2010

Before I made the leap to self-employment, I thought about how my schedule was going to be like.  I thought about what time I was going to wake up and what time I was going to work, and so forth.  I also thought to myself, “I’m going to work out more!” and was psyched I was going to be in better shape.

The week I started working, I had an overwhelming feeling of freedom.  I am self-employed!  I could wake up whenever I wanted and stop working when I wanted – no rules.  Believe it or not, I had developed a pretty strict attitude in that first week.  Sure, I can work whenever, but it’s really up to me to work if I want to make money.  So, in that first week, I worked, took a break to eat lunch, cook dinner, shower, rest for an hour or so, and then go right back to working a couple more hours.  I honestly did not work out much that first week, except for a few laps at the pool two days out of the week.

This week so far, I only worked out for 24 minutes, doing a condensed version of Jillian Michaels No Trouble Zones workout on Exercise TV.  Let me tell you, it was tough.  I think I would have fainted if I did the full version!  I pushed and got through it.  It made me realize I am slowly getting out of shape.  Working out is an ongoing struggle for me, and planning is really key for me to succeed.  I am grateful that my husband got cable TV back this week, with On Demand, because the Exercise TV workouts are pretty awesome for me.  I don’t really have an excuse to not work out anymore.  I know that everyone struggles with finding the time to work out, so I know the only solution is really to just set time for yourself and just do it.  Also, think about what it will do for you later.

So, if you’re struggling with fitting exercise in your busy day, let me know how you are getting through it.

Also, have a great weekend too!  Enjoy spending time with your loved ones and have fun with whatever you are doing!

Hey! I just found your blog and I definitely broke into a mini dance party when I read the title of it :)
I love getting my workouts done in the morning. That way, if I get nothing accomplished for the rest of the day, it hasn’t been a total waste. Plus, I eat a lot better when I workout in the morning. I always think, I’ve done something so good for myself and I don’t want to ruin it with unhealthy food.

Just found your blog via “Healthy Living Blogs!” I’m usually pretty good about laying out a plan for myself and knowing what I have to make time for. However, since going back to school last week, life has gotten a whole lot more complicated!

Right now it actually helps that I’m training for a half-marathon. I’m following a set schedule, so I know I have to run 4 miles one day of 7 another… That way, I can plan it into my schedule ahead of time.

Hey, I hear ya on finding time and motivation to get your workouts in; however, it looks like you are pretty balanced and I know you will make it a priority to keep healthy with good eating and exercise. With my 2 kids and job, it is hard to find time to exercise, but even if I just get in a high calorie burning workout like you did, it gives my body a change of routine. Here is a video I just made of a simple (but tough), short workout people can do when they don’t have much time: http://www.sohifitness.com/kettlebell-full-body…

Founnd you via HLB as another South Florida blogger! Love meeting others who understand my humidity whining :)

I like finding ways to sneak exercise in when life gets crazy. I usually don’t have that issue except when traveling for work and then I really find ways to walk everywhere I can

Hi Erin! Thanks for stopping by the blog! Good point about working
out in the morning. It’s out of the way and you’re more conscious
    about eating throughout the day!

It definitely is hard to work it in. On some days I will say I will do it at night, but guess what? That never happens. If I don’t do it in the morning, it doesn’t get done. Doing it at night is another way of planning not to do it at all.

    Hi Susan,
Good luck with your journey to health. It sounds like you are doing extensive research to find the best foods for your body and health. As an acupuncturist, I may also recommend looking at the times of day and quantities you are eating. Our bodies work best when we are in sync with the natural circadian rhythms of our internal clocks. You mentioned the caveman’s diet, well, he had no choice but to live with the light from the sun. Ideally, if we wake before 7am, breath and drink hot tea to wake our digestion, and then start our day, we will have more energy and a higher metabolism. Then the general rule of thumb is to “eat like a King in the morning, a Prince in the afternoon and a Pauper at night.” Eating a big meal at night is detrimental to our health. Calories are energy and we don’t need much to sleep. To help patients feel healthy, I always suggest trying to eat an early, light dinner. If you have eaten enough diversity of whole foods throughout the day, this will feel natural and easy. Another Chinese proverb is to take 100 steps after every meal. That is a fun one. Good luck and thank you for your blog!

Hi Jenna! That’s a cool way to look at it “eat like a King in the morning,
a Prince in the afternoon and a Pauper at night” It does make a lot of
sense to eat a smaller meal closer to the end of the day. I actually find
myself eating less at night since I eat snacks throughout the day.

    Thanks for visiting the blog!
