So you’ve finally decided to start working out. Congratulations! You’ve taken the first step towards a fitter you. You might have apprehensions about actually going to the gym for reasons such as looking like a fool wearing your workout gear or using equipment for the first time. So before we get to the part where we actually talk about the gear and gym equipment, keep in mind that everyone is so busy trying to get fit at the gym, they don’t really have time to stop and notice how much of a fool you are. Besides, they can be beginners as well and as apprehensive as you are. Now that we’ve established that, let’s get down to business.
Get the cheapest or the most expensive t-shirt or tank top; what matters most is that you’re comfortable in them. The same rule applies for your yoga pants, although you should consider buying those made from moisture-wicking fabric — it keeps the sweat off and prevents chafing. Now if there’s one thing that you have to really invest time and money in, it’s the shoes. What happens if you get the wrong shoes? Well, blisters and injuries. You don’t want those to happen so that you can push forward with your workout routine. As such, get an athletic pair of shoes from a speciality store; the staff can give you appropriate advice on the pair of shoes that will best suit the kind of workout you’re going to do.
Let’s assume that you’ve found the right gym for you. What you can do now is check out classes they may have for beginners; these may include aerobics, yoga, and dance-style workouts such as Zumba. This will help gain confidence as you decide how to move forward with your workout.
As for the equipment, the gym is generally divided into three areas. Your gym will have an area for cardio machines, which are made to make your heart and lungs more efficient. Cardio machines include bikes, cross trainers, and treadmills. Beginners are generally advised to start with cardio machines, such as walking on the treadmill.
Then there’s the resistance area, where you will find things such as barbells, dumbbells, benches, and squat racks. They are designed to strengthen your body. Beginners are usually advised to use the machines first rather than the free weights and should certainly use some form of gym glove or hand protection.
The flexible space is another area that you will find at your gym. You can use it for various tasks, such as stretching on the mats and training with equipment like balls and kettlebells.
So you’ve paid for a gym membership, and you just want to make the most out of it, which is a good thing. However, avoid overtraining. You don’t have to go to the gym every day; three to four times a week is sufficient. Also, don’t hesitate to ask for help from a trainer if you’re not sure of how to use a machine or do a certain exercise.
